Abstract : The design, fabrication and evaluation of a compact 1 to 2 kilowatt alkali metal vapor arc lamp was accomplished. The feasibility of using a noble gas for 'Cold Starting' and subsequent kilowatt operation was determined to be practical. A prototype lamp was successfully operated for a period of 300 hours at 1250 watts at a pressure of 100 Torr. The lamp was also operated at 1880 watts at 100 Torr in accordance with contract objectives. Two modes of operation, the ignited and the extinguished, were observed and studied. Fabrication and evaluation of a parametric test lamp established the existence of a relationship between optimum arc gap and sapphire bulb diameter. (Author)
