Abstract : The report contains specific investigations relevant to plasmas in energy conversion systems: The random walk theory was applied to the relaxation of the energy distribution of the electrons during the breakdown of helium gases in strong electric fields under the consideration of elastic, excitational, and ionizational collisions; The initial-boundary-value problem of the relaxation of an initial ionization distribution, produced by a strong breakdown field, into a steady-state discharge with a weak electric field in a gaseous flow was treated in the collective diffusion approximation; The nonlinear boundary-value problem for a discharge, in which ionization balances the plasma losses by diffusion and recombination, was solved rigorously. An approximate solution of the corresponding initial-boundary-value problem was derived by means of a nonlinear transformation; A novel wave-meachnical description was established for many component plasmas, in which the particles interact by the self-consistent electromagnetic field, for possible applications in turbulence theory.
