Abstract : The paper utilizes a variational approach to obtain optimal facility designs for a particular class of facility design problems. Attention is restricted to two-dimensional designs of area A, and the development is put into the context of warehouses. For a minimum average distance criterion, necessary optimality conditions are derived; then specific applications are given. Extensions are discussed. (Author)
