Abstract : It is well known that the kinetics of charge transfer processes occurring at potentials cathodic of the electrocapillary maximum are markedly affected by the cation present in the double layer. Thus, in a series of experimental investigations, it was previously found that the rate of reduction at constant potential of a particular cation decreased with increase in the crystallographic radius of the base electrolyte cation, whereas that of an anion increased. Modified kinetic equations that take into account the effects of cation size and electrostriction are presented in the paper. The predictions of the theory are examined with data for the reduction of the peroxydisulphate anion. (Author)
