Abstract : The report describes a thin layer chromatographic method for separating and identifying short-chain polymers of alpha-methylstyrene. The work forms part of an analytical programme in support of polymer synthesis studies using the living polymer technique. Results show that dimer, trimer, tetramer and small amounts of higher molecular weight oligomers of alpha-methylstyrene are formed, presumably by a chain-extending, Wurtz-type reaction, when the living polymer is 'killed' by addition of iodine.
