Abstract : The effects of chemical and radiative nonequilibrium upon high speed gas flows are quite different. These differences have been documented for blunt bodies with detached shock waves. More interesting slender body flows with inherent multi-dimensional radiative fields have received little attention. Herein expressions are derived for shock curvature at the tip of any wedge or cone in a radiating gas flow. Flow fields downstream of straight shock waves are investigated, and a class of exact solutions of the coupled equations of two dimensional radiative gasdynamics is found. Body shapes which generate straight shock waves are determined, and several important differences between radiative gasdynamics and chemically coupled gasdynamics in this situation are noted. Because the solutions obtained are restricted only in that the shock wave must be attached to the tip of the body, regimes of Mach number and body slope heretofore unexplored can be examined.
