Abstract : The use of the CAL shock-tube-driven molecular beam, in conjunction with its target beam and mass spectrometer, to measure scattered intensity at various angles from the main beam axis is reported. A 2.2 eV argon beam was fired into both argon and nitrogen target beams. The test chamber can be held at pressures in the low 10 to the -9th torr range. The mass spectrometer can be operated at very high sensitivity, but it exhibits a slow response which has been traced to the ionizer and is a function of emission current. The use of the mass spectometer is a detector of atoms scattered from a solid surface, and as a gas sampler for main beam composition studies, are also reported. (Author)
