Abstract : Considered in this paper are problems of optimal structural design for minimum static deflection, minimum dynamic deflection, maximum fundamental frequency, and maximum stability. A procedure based on the Ritz method is proposed which yields approximate solutions to these problems when the design is characterized by a discrete set of design parameters. Examples involving elastic beams and rods are presented to demonstrate the applicability and efficiency of the procedure. (Author)
