Abstract : The study summarizes for a period of 40 to 50 years the annual observations of water temperatures at a number of coastal ship road and open sea stations in the Baltic Sea. Scientific observations in the Bornholm and Gotland depressions, as well as in the northern portion of the sea, were utilized. Existing data show that by the end of the twenties and in the thirties a rise of the mean yearly surface layer water temperature of the Baltic took place. This was caused and accompanied by a rise in air temperature. Analogous phenomenon also occurred in the bottom layers of the sea, but this continued into the forties and the beginning of the fifties and was caused mainly by an intensified influx of the Kattegat waters.
