Abstract : 'Vetrovye Volny' (Wind Waves) consists of a series of 16 articles which were presented for discussion and debate at the Scientific Conference on Sea Waves organized by the Oceanographic Commission at the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, which took place from December 8 to 12, 1958. Since the task of the conference was to define the objectives of the various fields of marine sciences that are connected, directly or indirectly, with wind waves, the reports analyze a variety of themes such as, the problems and methods of studying waves for prognostic purposes, the modern methods of quantitative characteristics of sea waves, statistical characteristics of irregular wind waves in a limited reservoir, spectral properties of sea waves, calculation of decaying sea waves at a decreasing wind speed, methods of wavegraph observations, stereophotography of sea agitation and many other phenomena of wind waves whose elucidation advances oceanography and aids navigation. Frequently the authors analyze and also evaluate the research and achievements of other oceanographers in the Soviet Union and abroad, on which they base their conclusions or which influence their studies.
