Abstract : The constitutive equations required to analyze the behavior of thermorheologically simple materials in which thermomechanical coupling effects are of interest are derived from three different viewpoints. The theory of irreversible thermodynamics developed by Biot, the rational mechanics approach developed by Coleman, and a phenomenological model approach described by Staverman and Schwarzl are each used to obtain the energy equation, including the dissipation function, for thermoviscoelastic materials. Although the approaches are considerably different, the results are shown to be practically equivalent. (Author)
