Abstract : The thesis presents an approach to the learning problem and a learning-oriented approach to the artificial intelligence problem. These approaches are illustrated in a computer program called INSIM1. which models simple forms of learning analogous to the learning of a human infant during the first few weeks of his life, such as learning to suck the thumb and learning to perform elementary hand-eye coordination. The program operates by discovering cause-effect relationships and arranging them in a goal tree. The work is discussed in relation to fundamental scientific issues, and proposals are made for future research. (Author)
