Abstract : Single crystals of NaCl were deformed by fluid-to-fluid extrusion and uniaxial compression under hydrostatic pressure at ambient temperature. The effect of pressure on the deformation and fracture was studied. Wavy slip was observed in crystals extruded at pressures above 10 kbar indicating the operation of <110>(001) slip. Cracking occurred on (110) planes as well as the (100) cleavage planes. <111> cylindrical crystals deformed by uniaxial compression were ductile above 7 kbar and exhibited <110>(001) straight slip.
