Abstract : Development work was initiated on a premature-ventricular-contraction (PVC)-recognition system which would recognize a PVC and give automatic warning when certain criteria regarding frequency and type were met. Since PVC's can be a precursor of certain dire cardiac states (e.g., ventricular fibrillation) such warning could give sufficient time for preventative measures, such as the injection of drugs. Furthermore, an automatic system is the only practical means of observing PVC's since their infrequent occurrence usually makes it necessary to observe the electrocardiogram closely for a period of time before their initiation can be detected. Initial work on this system has included (1) surveying existing devices, (2) designing and constructing additional equipment needed for the collection of three-channel, tape-recorded PVC data, (3) collecting some data, and (4) making some initial PVC-system and circuit design.
