Abstract : Simple models for describing the elastic constants of b.c.c. crystals in terms of force constants for stretching and bending of bonds are discussed. It is concluded that observed elastic constants are compatible with a model comprising a volume-dependent term and central force terms between nearest neighbours and next-nearest neighbours in the strain energy.
