Abstract : The preparation and use of microbial enzymes has increased recently due to introduction of enzyme detergents for industrial use and domestic clothes washing, and to the application of a variety of enzymes in medical diagnosis and therapy. Microbiologists are meeting the challenge for enzymes of unique properties, high purity and increased stability, by imaginative cooperation with biochemists and engineers. Developments with encapsulated and immobilized enzymes attached to various membranes or matrices show promise for solving many problems. Progress in preparing and assaying, by automated methods, large amounts of purified asparaginase for use in cancer therapy provides an example of the capabilities of microbiologists in this area.
