Abstract : The steady profile of plane shocks in 6061-T6 aluminum by Johnson and Barker is compared with the unsteady ones obtained by a finite difference integration of dynamic Lagrangian equations. The results purport the conclusions similar to theirs but are not conclusive as they claim. The computed profiles at the distance of 0.6 approximately 1.0 cm from the impact plane are quite close to those of steady profiles in the sigma - epsilon plane, but they seem to be sensitive to the last stretch of the convergence. Also, it is found that strain rate functions proposed by Johnson and Barker are double-valued at high stresses and need to be further clarified in the future. Since the shock structures are based on the elastic-plastic behaviors of Al, extremely sharp elastic spikes are observed in a domain close to the impact plane. (Author)
