Abstract : A simplified theoretical analysis of a continuous chemical laser is presented, primarily to acquaint the reader with the constant-gain method of solution and to emphasize the strong coupling in the cavity between the radiation and the chemistry. Lasing is assumed to occur in a Fabry-Perot cavity on vibration-rotation transitions between two vibrational levels of a hypothetical diatomic molecule. A Boltzmann distribution is assumed for the rotational populations, thereby further restricting lasing to the maximum gain transition in the P-branch. New features in this study include: (1) An analysis of J-shifting in which lasing shifts from one rotational transition to the next; (2) A demonstration that the closed cavity condition, wherein the mirrors are perfectly reflecting, is an indeterminate limit with a finite output power; (3) A comprehensive parametric analysis that indicates that a high lasing efficiency might be attainable under certain operating conditions.
