Abstract : A theoretical model for the irregular refraction of a plane shock wave by a wedge of hot gas was developed to determine the attenuation of the incident shock by the hot gas. The analysis was based on the assumption that the entire flow field is pseudo-stationary. Computations were made for a wedge half-angle of 5 degrees, Mach numbers from 3 to 9, and sound-speed ratios from 2 to 6. The results showed the Mach Number of the transmitted shock to be some 10 to 20 per cent lower than that for normal refraction at the same Mach number and with the same sound speed ratio. The difference was interpreted as being due to the attenuation of the incident shock by the expansion wave behind the shock system. (Author)
