Abstract : Up to the present time nearly all work with ultrasonics has been done in inorganic crystals. Because of the continuing need for new and better materials and also the growing interest in biophysics, an investigation of the, at present, relatively unknown acoustic and photoelastic properties of organic crystals is timely and has been started in this project. The first part of the investigation is concerned with the diffraction of light by microwave sound in organic crystals whereas the second is concerned with the measurement of the elastic constants of organic and biological crystals. Measurement of the elastic constants of most of these crystals presents a problem in that they can usually be grown only in small sizes and often must be kept in a mother liquid to prevent rapid deterioration. A method of measuring some of the elastic constants under these conditions has been developed. (Author)
