Abstract : An indirect method of detecting short-lived reactive free radicals was developed which involves the addition of the free radical to an unsaturated organic function to produce a long lived relatively stable radical. This radical was then studied by electron spin resonance spectroscopy. The most useful unsaturated functions were found to be nitroso and nitrone compounds which give nitroxide addition products and the process was called spin trapping. A particularly important application was to show that gas phase free radicals may also be trapped on solid phenyl t-butyl nitrone. (Author)
