Abstract : The report summarizes research undertaken to synthesize and investigate new nonstoichiometric compounds of the transition elements, particularly at the metal-nonmetal transition. Systems studied included the oxide bronzes, oxygen-deficient oxides, and rare-earth hexaborides. Magnetic, electric, Hall and Seebeck, and resonance properties are described. The principal findings were that defects leading to nonstoichiometry are ordered at much lower dilutions than hitherto believed, the nonmetal-metal transition is rarely sharp, the magnetic coupling in the metallic state is quite weak.
