Abstract : A method for the assessment of the degree of transmission of filarid worms in filariasis endemic area was developed. The application of a skin test using a purified antigen from dog filaria, Dirofilaria immitis, was proposed for the purpose. The field tests were carried out at Koniya area in Amani-Oxhima Island where bancroftian filariasis is endemic. Skin test using the highly purified fraction from the adult worms of Dirofilaria immitis as the antigen (FST-Antigen) was sensitive enough to detect the transmission with either bancroftian or malayan filariasis in human and with dog filariasis in dogs. No cross reactions occurred with other intestinal nematode infections and only around 5% of the persons in filariasis free district reacted postively to the test, therefore, the specificity of the test on human was evaluated as 94.9%.
