Abstract : During the past decade several models have been constructed which use the techniques of mathematical programming to select the least-cost solution to the problem of river and estuary pollution. The development of these models has been based on the explicit consideration of a river as an interrelated system with regard to water quality. The recognition of the nature of this system has allowed, in a theoretical context, large reductions in the total treatment costs in a river basin. It is the purpose of this paper to present a model which adequately considers all important treatment alternatives available and correctly describes their effects on water quality. (Author)
