Abstract : The program objective is to study and establish the design criteria for a high efficiency, high gain, high power klystron final amplifier stage operating in the 4.4 to 5.0 GHz range. The klystron final amplifier is defined as the klystron tube plus its focusing and cooling schemes. The objective power level is 10 kW CW and the objective final amplifier efficiency is 47 percent. A klystron design tradeoff analysis was made and a scheme using second harmonic space-charge bunching was chosen; a study was undertaken to determine the most efficiency and practical focusing scheme; and a magnet design computer program was written for more convenient study of the various materials and coil configurations, with intention of selecting a coil design for optimum efficiency. The program and a sample case are presented here. A coolant study is in progress to choose a cooling scheme which will meet the requirements of a practical, reliable, and efficient system. Results thus far point to a vapor phase (ebullient) cooling system using a water/Dowtherm 209 mixture, but final selection of fluid and system have not been made. A preliminary study to determine the best cavity design has begun but definitive conclusions have not yet been reached. (Author)
