Abstract : The investigation is intended as a first step towards continuum theories of interacting 'defects' (e.g. inclusions, dislocations). These theories would deal with aspects of local nonhomogeneity that influence strength, ductility, and other vital properties of materials. The unified approach to interactions of defects applies to both rigid and deformable defects. The following special cases are used as illustrations: Rigid dislocation loops, Rigid inclusions, Image forces, Expansion of a dislocation loop, Helical dislocations, and The equilibrium shape of a dislocation line.
