Abstract : A high density Ni Zn ferrite, with high permeability and high Q factor for RF applications, has been developed by utilizing a new cryogenic crush procedure. In this procedure, extensive grinding, which is normally required to obtain small particle size, is replaced by crushing the calcined ferrite under liquid nitrogen plus a short ball mill cycle prior to sintering. Permeabilities of 20 at a Q of 100 were obtained on toroidal samples tested at 350 MHz. Magnetic properties were determined by applying a bias field greater than needed for resonance parallel to the axis of the toroid. The study includes the effects of hot-pressing temperature and crushing procedure variables on the magnetic and physical properties of the ferrite. (Author)
