Abstract : MoS2 reacts with SO2 at elevated temperatures to form MoO2 and free sulphur, as follows: moS2 + SO2 = MoO2 + 3S. The reaction, which commences at about 800 C and proceeds to completion in about 3 h at 1100 C, may be regarded as a new method of preparing MoO2. It occurs both during the burning of molybdenite ores and in the reaction of MoS2 with CO2, since both of these reactions produced SO2. CO inhibits, the usual reactsion of MoS2 and SO2, since the SO2 preferentially react with CO. The major reaction products of MoS2 and CO2 are MoO2 and SO2. The absence of metallic molybdenum is attributed to the subsequent oxidation to MoO2 by either SO2 or CO2, both of which are present in the reaction atmosphere. No reaction has been observed between SO2 and MoO2 at temperatures up to 1000C. (Author)
