Abstract : The structure of the electric double layer as solid metal solution interfaces has been studied. A new technique, based on electrocapillary thermodynamics, has been developed to determine surface excess charge at a given electrode for various electrode potentials and solution concentrations. The technique makes use of rapid immersion of dry electrodes into solution and following the current required to establish the interfacial region. With this technique, surface excess Cl(-) ions has been determined at gold electrodes. (Author)
