Abstract : The paper presents an application of the scattering theory of P. D. Lax and R. S. Phillips to a class of wave propagation problems of classical physics. The problems are governed by symmetric hyperbolic systems. The generalization of the results of Lax and Phillips presented here is based on a new coerciveness theorem for nonelliptic operators due to Schulenberger and Wilcox. (Author)
