Abstract : Male college students (N=23) trained contralateral limbs by isometric and isotonic techniques for a period of eleven weeks. Criterion strength (5RM) of the forearm flexor muscles was recorded during each week of training. Comparisons were made between the weekly strength scores produced by the two training techniques in order to determine which technique produced more rapid strength gains. Weekly percentage changes were also calculated. Analysis of data indicated that no significant difference existed between the weekly strength scores recorded for the two programs. On the basis of the data gathered in this study, one may conclude that gains in muscular strength following isometric and isotonic training will occur at a similar rate. (Author)
