Abstract : The general layer problem with a piezoelectric layer on a piezoelectric substrate requires computer solutions to determine propagation velocities and displacement components for the various modes. However, it is useful to examine the separation or simplification of these modes imposed by the crystalline symmetry. A classification is introduced that divides layer and substrate materials into five categories depending on the uncoupling of the displacement components and potential resulting from the symmetry of the crystal with respect to the propagation direction. The classification appropriate to propagation along each of the principal directions of the principal planes of the 32 crystal classes is tabulated. (Author)
