Abstract : The article discusses two kinds of hardware which usually realize sequential circuits: in the first one, input and output functions are given by the position of mechanical or electromagnetic relays; and, in the second one, input and output functions are sequences of electronic pulses; the machines are said to be respectively under form S or T. The machine works in a synchronous or asynchronous way; its operating mode is hierarchical or fundamental according to whether or not there is a timing for the transition of its states. Then the classification of the models according to their form and their operating mode leads to the definition of a new kind of automaton, called Sigma sub H, under form T and of fundamental mode; this machine is related to the study of the micro and pico-programming. Similar methods applied to the stochastic case lead to the introduction of a new model Sigma sub R. Finally one explains that the introduction of these new models is justified by significant applications to the realization of the circuits of a computer, to the reliability of such circuits, and to the estimation of the switching points and calls in a program.
