Abstract : The equations describing the dynamic properties of a typical non-linear load disturbed system were derived with the objective of developing a superior control system in this application through use of analog computer function optimization techniques. The automatic control systems generally used in this application employ proportional-plus-integral devices as the controller in the closed loop. The determination of the optimum values of the coefficients of the proportional and integral terms is normally accomplished by trial and error procedures. In an effort to obviate this procedure, the method developed computed the optimum values of gain and integration constant of a conventional proportional-plus-integral controller using an analog computer operating iteratively and in fast time. The results of this computation were applied directly to the settings of a controller in a closed loop system operating in real time. The speed of the optimization process was such that optimum controller settings were determined for a disturbance after the disturbance had taken placed but before the process had responded to any significant degree.
