Abstract : Sediment probe and echo sounding techniques for volume reverberation measurements were investigated. Long decay time of the feedover transmitted signal in the receiver prevented measurements with the sediment probe that was used. Gas bubbles in the sediments prevented adequate evaluation of the echo sounding technique. A model study of the echo sounding method in a laboratory tank at 325 kHz gave equivalent surface scattering strength for a fine sand sediment (insonified with a pulselength of 0.66 in. in the sediment) of -16.2, -15.7, -27.3, and -15.0 dB. The mathematical basis of the reverberation experiments is developed and recommendations for further study are included. (Author)
