Abstract : It is shown that dislocation configurations in a continuum can be divided into two parts: (a) stress producing and (b) zero stress. The zero-stress parts can be described by arbitrary scalars, vectors, and antisymmetric tensors, and this formulation allows the deduction of the technique for determining the stress-producing part. Some aspects of the zero-stress dislocations and zero-stress-zero-force configurations are discussed relative to electron microscopy observations and high-temperature creep. (Author)
