Abstract : The reactions occurring between CO2 and MoS2 have been studied in the temperature range 100-1100C. Reaction commences at approximately 200C, but only to a very limited extent. Below 500C, the quantities of gaseous products are insufficient for quantitative analysis. The rate of reaction increases with increasing temperature; complete reaction occurs in 54 h at 900C. The main solid reaction product is MoO2, whilst CO and SO2 are the major gaseous products. Liquid reaction products were not observed. The main reaction is expressed by the equation MoS2 + 6CO2 = MoO2 + 2SO2 + 6CO . The expected ratio of 1:3 between the gaseous products SO2 and CO is not observed, and this is attributed to side reactions. (Author)
