Abstract : Estimates of component damage and/or expected numbers of malfunctions in computers due to lightning have been obtained on the basis of data on the frequency of thunderstorm days and preliminary information on the vulnerability of unprotected computers to like-lightning simulated disturbances. It is roughly estimated that as many as half-a-dozen malfunctions per year might be expected in Florida and as few as one malfunction in two years in New England. The number of cases of actual component damage due to lightning might be expected to be as much as three orders of magnitude less than the numbers of malfunctions. (Author)
