Abstract : Octahedra and rod shaped crystals of semiconducting ferromagnetic chalcogenide spinel (Cu(x)Cd(1-x)Cr2Se4) have been grown from molten CdCl2 by slow cooling or by the travelling heater method (THM). Slow cooling of its solution in molten CdCl2 resulted in single crystal octahedra up to 3-4 mm size. The THM grown rods were 8 mm in diameter and 35-40 mm long. THM grown rods were quite inhomogeneous in composition and magnetic behavior. Some of this polyphase material was semiconducting and showed ferromagnetism at temperatures up to 80C. (Author)
