Abstract : An improved Wilks, Stringer, Barty method for the design of digital computer flow charts is described. The method means for description of the structural elements of the functional diagram, functional structure, and dynamics of the computer in the form of rough and exact microprograms. The rough microporgram is an algorithm for completion of instructions using the given functional structure. The exact microprogram is a step by-step description of the algorithm with indication of all the limitations of the microperations execution sequence. Formulas for the trigger input can be derived from the exact microprograms. Brolian formulas can be derived from the description of combination diagrams. Methods are given for the description of structural elements and functional diagrams, and for compiling rough and exact microprograms. Applications of the method is illustrated with the example of the design of a rough printed microprogram from a given rough functional structure, and with the example of compiling an exact microprogram from the designed rough microprogram.
