Abstract : The structure of the constitutive relations which govern the force-deformation laws for continuous media are analysed. It is pointed out that the classical laws commonly used in stress analysis often need to be generalized for satisfactory application to short-time dynamic loading. Some such generalizations introduced to cope with so-called 'real' material behavior are assessed. The formulation of constitutive laws to include finite deformation, irreversible phenomena and the generation of permanent changes of shape are discussed for general motion in three dimensions. The simplification of these laws for one-dimensional strain, such as occurs in the propagation of plane irrotational waves is considered. The relation of this general approach to the analysis of dynamic loading of materials is also presented. (Author)
