Abstract : In 1959-62 during three voyages of the r/v Vityaz' 270 grab samples and 256 cores of sediments, from 1 to 15m long, were collected in central and northern parts of the Indian Ocean, including the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. It is possible to distinguish the following sediments by their genetic composition in the northern part of the Indian Ocean: I. Terrigenous; II. Volcanogenous; III. Organogenous; (1) calcareous-foraminiferal ooze, pteropod ooze, coral sediments; (2) siliceous-radiolarian ooze, diatoms ooze; IV. Polygenous (red and grey clays); V. Chemogenous (manganese nodules). More fractional types of sediments are present in each group. Numerous outcroppings of hard rocks, mainly basalts, were found on the ocean bottom. The serpentinites were found on the surface of the Arabian-Indian Ridge. Deep-sea sedimentation in the Indian Ocean is connected with climatic, circumcontinental and vertical zonality; that is, it depends on the latitude of place, bottom depth and distance from the land.
