Abstract : At-sea experiments were conducted to determine if an illumination ranging technique can greatly improve underwater photographic range and areal coverage where ambient light is absent. The results of these experiments demonstrate that substantial photographic improvements can be obtained where the effects of source-light scattering and absorption can be minimized by proper illumination-camera geometry. Photographs were taken of targets at ranges to 43 meters (140 feet) and areal coverage was significantly improved over that obtained by conventional techniques. (Author)
