Abstract : The work presents experimental results obtained with reverse flow vortex chambers which indicate the maximum experimental tangential Mach number is below 1.60. Helium, carbon dioxide and air were used in the investigation. Tests were conducted over a range of inlet pressures and temperatures, exhaust chamber back pressures, mass flow splits, exhaust throat areas, and chamber volume. Calculations, based on the experimental data, showed that the maximum rotational velocity can be increased by nearly 300% by changing gases or decreasing the exhaust throat area even though the maximum Mach number remains essentially the same. Tests also indicated the possibility of two peaks as the mass flow split is varied. However, additional testing must be accomplished to verify the two peaks. (Author)
