Abstract : The report presents the results of a preliminary study of electromagnetic disturbances caused by the motion of a charged fluid, with an eye to detecting clear air turbulence. Three models were considered: isolated turbulence in a homogeneously charged fluid, a coherent wave motion of a homogeneously charged fluid, and a wave motion of a strongly charged sheet in an uncharged region. It is concluded that detection of the fields produced by the isolated turbulence model may be just possible if statistical detection techniques are used. A ground-based magnetic detector appears to be best suited to detecting electromagnetic disturbances produced by this sort of turbulence. (Author)
