Abstract : The morphogenesis of epicorneal structures in nocturnal Lepidoptera was studied with light and electron microscopy. The main ultrastructural events involved in the formation of the corneal nipples during the ontogenetic development of the distal parts of the optic imaginal disc were described in the pupa of the tobacco hornworm moth, Manduca sexta, and other night moths. AT any stage, the development of the epicorneal membrane was found to be equally advanced in all facets of the eye anlage, whereas the differentiation of the ommatidial cell groups was always less advanced in the zone of transition to the anterior extraocular area than in the inner parts of the eye. The results were discussed in comparison with those described in reports on the morphogenesis of the body cuticle of insects. (Author)
