Abstract : Objectives achieved in this joint experimental and theoretical project include an enhanced understanding of the ferromagnetism of rare-earth hydrides and also of rare-earth metals; a new theoretical 'echo' expansion technique for studying disordered materials; a mapping of the electron charge density in the semimetal arsenic; the discovery of an experimental multiple-pulse technique in nuclear magnetic resonance which reduces the effective instrumental time resolution to zero and allows extremely accurate measurement of relaxation parameters; a measurement of the proton correlation time in ice; a study of spin-lattice relaxation of nuclei in antiferromagnets and of spin diffusion in magnetically doped calcium fluoride; and a calculation of proton relaxation in hydrogen sulfide.
