Abstract : The calibration of the signals of given longitudinal and transversal magnetic fields recorded by a solar magnetograph is carried out by three different methods: (1) the given signals (expressed in units of calibration signal E - W) are compared with given field strengths determined photographically at Meudon observatory for the same points inside the sunspot groups of Sept. 17 and 18, 1963; the corresponding mean calibration curve is also shown; (2) given signals are compared with the field strengths determined from the visual measurements of Zeeman splitting for 32 days of simultaneous observations and the cases of practically entirely longitudinal and transversal fields are selected; (3) the dependence of given signals on the field strength of laboratory magnet is determined by observations along and across the lines of force. All three methods lead to calibration dependences which are in good mutual agreement but deviate greatly from theoretical dependences obtained for optically thick spectral lines in a homogeneous field. Analysis of all possible sources of this divergence has led to the conclusion that existing theories are inadequate because they do not account for the real observed inhomogeneity of the magnetic field.
