Abstract : The physical response of a semicircular canal to rotational movement in its own plane is the outcome of continuous interplay between forces due to inertia and viscosity of the contained fluid and elasticity of the cupula. When the head rotates relative to an already rotating platform, the interactions of these three variables in a set of three orthogonal canals is rather complex. Various authors have examined these interactions using a variety of analytical methods. The article examines the functional nature of cross-coupled responses in terms which it is hoped may be understandable by those who are unfamiliar with the relevant methods of analysis. For this, it is helpful to examine first the response of a simplified model comprising only one circular canal and without introduction of forces due to cupular elasticity; that is, considering the fluid displacement in a circular tube which has no transducing cupular system interfering with the flow pattern of response.
