Abstract : To determine the short-term variability of sound speed in oceanic and coastal waters, time series measurements were obtained at eight depths in the upper 1000 meters in the Tongue of the Ocean, Bahamas, and at six depths from the surface to the bottom, 35 meters, in Rhode Island Sound. The observed variability is discussed relative to the sound speed profile existing at the time the measurements were made. The data is then investigated using both statistical and spectral analysis techniques. The results of these analyses, in addition to characterizing the variability, provide some insights into the probable physical process involved. (Author)
